1. Vicks Warm Mist

Vicks Warm MistThe Vicks warm mist humidifier is suitable for single rooms and is used primarily to alleviate and sooth sore throats, coughs, colds and flu symptoms. The added bonus of being able to add inhalants like Vicks Vaposteam and eucalyptus oil to produce a medicated vapor, which is very effective for alleviating breathing difficulties, especially with children. It is a simple and straight forward device which works well in small closed rooms.

A very quiet humidifier that can operate for up to 12 hours before having to be refilled, this unit boils water to form a pure steam vapor, which is up to 96% bacteria free. This mixes with dry air in the cooling chamber and releases warm, moist air into the room. The water tank, which is transparent, is easy to refill, unscrew the cap and turn it upside down and fill with distilled water which is recommended, to prevent hard water residue building up in the device. There is no filter in this unit so do not use tap water or any water softener that contains salt.

The device has two comfort settings and comes with a soft glow light. Another important feature is the automatic shut-off, which comes into effect when the water tank is empty. The green light indicates that the humidifier is working and the orange light indicates that the reservoir is out of the water and needs to be refilled.

This Ultrasonic humidifier is perfect for any small area were you want beneficial medicated and humidified air to breath when you and your family are not feeling well. This is a table top, portable unit, which is very easy to move around and can be placed on any small, sturdy surface.

Relatively inexpensive the Vicks Warm Mist Humidifier is good value for money.

On the negative side, as there are no filters, this device needs regular cleaning. You will need to take it apart and clean the mineral build up around the heater and the plastic regularly, if you allow water to sit, mold will grow. In hard water, areas soak the removable parts in vinegar to remove calcium build up. Before refilling the tank, add a teaspoon of bleach, let it stand for a minute and then give it a good rinse.

It is advisable to switch the humidifier on 15 minutes before you go to bed as it does take that long to heat up the water and start producing steam. As this a small humidifier, it is only suitable for medium to small rooms, you would have to keep the doors and windows closed at all times, to produce adequate results.

If you are storing the device away in the summer months, it may be a bit difficult to clean and dry the water tank as the opening on the top is rather small, and this makes it difficult to get the excess water out and to dry completely before it is packed away.

Pros

Simple and easy to use
Lightweight, easy to carry
Value for money
Recommended for medical inhalants

Cons

Only suitable for small closed rooms
Needs constant cleaning
Not all parts are dishwasher safe
Takes time to warm up

2. Ultrasonic Cool Mist Anypro 3.5L

Ultrasonic Cool Mist Anypro 3.5LVoted one of the best humidifiers for home and baby, the Anypro 3.5L Ultrasonic Cool Mist Humidifier has many favorable features. Made from premium plastic with anti-mold materials this unit has health benefits that not all humidifiers have.

With a water tank that takes up to 3.5L, the unit can run uninterrupted for up to 36 hours. The control settings do not have the usual, low/med/high options, with this humidifier, you have a 360-degree adjustable mist spray which allows you to control the stream of mist that is emitted. The unit provides a steady flow of mist which leaves no condensation and is suitable for medium to large sized rooms. The cool steam properties of this humidifier make it a safer option to have if you have small children and pets.

It is always advisable to place your humidifier off the ground to avoid moisture buildup on your floors. The ideal position would be to place on a small table, away from the walls and other furniture to allow for the proper distribution of humidity.

The Anypro Cool Mist Humidifier was designed in the USA and its sturdy construction which has deep grooves greatly reduces the possibility of leakage or breakage.

For those who prefer or need to keep the unit operating all night, the Anypro offers peace of mind because it is super quiet and safe. The automatic shut off function which comes into effect when the humidifier runs out of the water ensures that there is no danger of destroying the unit.

The antibacterial materials used, help to suppress mold growth. To prevent calcium build up, it is recommended that you use distilled water to fill the tank. The unit does not come with a filter, a brush is supplied for cleaning, and it is recommended that the humidifier is cleaned once a week for better maintenance. Avoid letting the same water stand for too long, all humidifiers will get a moldy buildup if water is left to stand. Rinsing out with water and vinegar solution and allowing the unit to air dry after cleaning will go a long way in the prevention of mold. After cleansing it is essential to realign the unit in the center, the Logo of the product must be aligned with the power indicator securely before reusing. You need to align the tank and base properly for it to work, this action ensures that there is no water leakage.

There have been unfavorable reviews regarding the aromatherapy diffuser. There is a small aromatherapy drawer which has a disposable pad, to which you can add a few drops of essential oils. As the water and steam do not come into contact with the essential oil, it does not work as a diffuser and the release of fragrance from the essential oils into the air is minimal. Another negative point about the diffuser is that the tiny lid is not attached securely and it is very easy to misplace if it falls off.

As a humidifier, The Anypro Cool Mist has all the features one would expect to find in a good quality unit, but it is not an aromatherapy diffuser, and you should not buy this unit if this function is primarily what you are looking for.

The biggest plus for me were the countless reviews received by major suppliers from people who bought this model, regarding the excellent after sales service from AnyPro. In all cases, whether the problem was big or small, all issues were resolved quickly and the company went over and above the call of duty to ensure customer satisfaction.

Pros

Very easy to use
Compact and powerful
Up to 36 hours continuous use
360 degrees adjustable mist spray
Antibacterial properties
No filters to change
Excellent customer service

Cons

Aromatherapy function inadequate
User manual does not have clear instructions
Does not have internal hydrometer

3. URPOWER 500ml Aromatherapy

URPOWER 500ml AromatherapyIf you are looking for a combination Aromatherapy Essential Oil Diffuser and Humidifier, this is the unit to choose. The URPOWER 550ML is primarily an Aromatherapy Diffuser, but also offers other functions which include, Humidifier, Air Purifier, Ionizer and Night Light.

For a diffuser, the water capacity of 500ml is considered large, as most aromatherapy diffusers only have a 100ml capacity. However, the water capacity is low if you want to use the Urpower unit primarily as a humidifier, as most humidifiers hold up to 3.5 liters and offer continuous use for up to 36 hours

The 500ml capacity can produce steam for up to 10 hours before it needs to be refilled. This unit also has an automatic shutdown feature which switches off the machine when the water is depleted. It also comes with a timer control.

The Advanced Ultrasonic diffusing technology offered by this unit ensures that the beneficial properties of the essential oils are not compromised by heat. The powerful ultrasonic vibrations, which force fine micro particles of water and essential oils into the air, encourage healthy body absorption. This combination, aromatherapy, and humidifier, acts as an Air Purifier and improves the quality of the air we breathe and helps to lift our mood and relieve stress.

The unit can be used without the essential oils as a humidifier for the relief of dry coughs, sinus, asthma and allergies. Using it with or without the addition of essential oils, the Urpower helps with relieving dry and itchy skin conditions as well.

When used as an ionizer, the unit releases negative ions into the air to combat harmful positive ions. This automatically improves the quality of the air and provides many positive health benefits. It can prevent damage from second-hand smoke, improve breathing by freshening stale air and strengthen the immune system.

This unit is ideal for smaller rooms and can be used at home or at work. It is great if you want a pleasant aroma with humidity! Many health spas use this type of diffuser/humidifier to help with relaxation and stress relief for their clients. This unit provides a holistic approach to design and gives you moist air that smells clean and fresh.

The URPOWER 550ML comes with a 7 LED color changing night light which is aesthetically pleasing. The lighting function can be used even when you are not diffusing and can replace a bedside lamp, especially in the children’s room. Pressing the light button in different sequences allows you to choose from 7 colors and to set the mood achieved by the touch of a button!  There is an on and off button if you decide you need no light at all.

Extra care must be given when cleaning this unit as the essential oils will leave some residue. To avoid bacteria and other microorganisms from growing, and being reintroduced into the air the device needs to be thoroughly cleaned at least twice a week. Rinsing out with a combination of vinegar and water and allowing to air dry completely is recommended. Do not use abrasive cleaners, soaking removable parts in a vinegar solution usually, solves the problem of calcium and oil residue when needed.

If you love aromatherapy, and it is a diffuser that you are looking for, the URPOWER Aromatherapy Essential Oil Diffuser/Humidifier is a perfect choice.

Pros

Unbeatable price
Auto shut off
Ultrasonic diffusing technology
Air purifier/ ionizer
Night light

Cons

Needs regular cleaning
Unit stops working if touched

4. Honeywell HCM350W Cool Mist – Best Cool Mist Humidifier

Honeywell HCM350W Cool MistThe Honeywell HCM350W Cool Mist Humidifier comes highly recommended for its patented germ killing technology features and its quiet care performance.

This is an evaporative type of humidifier which has a UV light that kills the bacteria in the water before it comes into contact with the wick. The replaceable wick removes impurities from the water and reduces white dust emanating from the unit. The features mentioned above are said to kill up to 99% of bacteria, mold, fungus and viruses.

Like all humidifiers, the Honeywell is great at relieving and preventing asthma, bronchial and throat problems. In very dry climates the extra humidity will also go a long way in preventing dry and itchy skin. Humidifiers are great for the environment we live in, they reduce static electricity and are beneficial for our pets. Even our furniture and plants benefit from extra moisture in the air.

Although this unit is quite bulky, it has a great design and is simple to operate. It is relatively quiet in the low and medium settings but is slightly audible when setting on high. It is designed to be used in medium size rooms.

The device comes with a large 7-liter tank which is easy to carry and fill through its wide opening. The tank can be filled with tap water as there are measures in place that filter the water. When full the unit can run up to 24 hours on a low setting. Unlike the ultrasonic models, this humidifier does not need to be distilled water to run calcium free. It does, however, have the wick, which needs to be cared for, and it is recommended that the wick is rinsed and turned inside out with every change of water. This will keep the wick in optimum condition and extend its use for more than a month. The changing of the wick filter is high maintenance, and it can be expensive, but you have to take into consideration that the filter it works with has a self-regulating Evaporative System which adjusts the amount of moisture in the air and they work together to remove impurities and provide clean moisture. This makes the cost and effort worth it.

Most of the removable parts are dish washer safe, and the rest of the unit can be kept clean with a spray of vinegar, bleach, and water followed by a good rinse. When storing the unit, it is important to take it apart and give it a good clean. Let it air dry before storage. Never leave the wick in the machine when it is not working, it has to be removed, cleaned and dried. When the wick is reused, it had to be soaked properly and kept wet for it to function as a filter. Humidifiers can be a health hazard unless frequently cleaned, with time grime will collect in the fan and hard to reach places, unless regularly wiped down.

On the negative side, the Honeywell HCM350W Cool Mist Humidifier does not come with a humidistat so you would have to buy one separately if you wanted to keep track of the humidity in the room. Another important feature it does not have is the automatic switch off feature, this can be dangerous if the humidifier is left on all night because you have no way of knowing that the water tank is empty.

All in all, an excellent humidifier for the health conscious.

Pros

Simple to operate
Uv light kills bacteria
Wick filters impurities
No white dust
No excess moisture
Large tank

Cons

Wick cleaning and changing
Direction of airflow cannot be adjusted
No built in humidistat
No automatic switch off feature
On the expensive side

5. TaoTronics Cool Mist

TaoTronics Cool MistThis TaoTronics model is a sturdily built, good quality humidifier with outstanding features. It is an ultrasonic humidifier which is fitted with a microporous ceramic cartridge filter that purifies the water and eliminates calcium, magnesium ions, micro-organisms and bad odors.

Suitable for medium sized rooms, this practically inaudible unit, comes with a humidity mode and mist level control switch which is used to adjust the humidity. The mist outlet point has a 360-degree nozzle which also allows you to adjust the angle of the mist, everything you need, to make sure that the levels and direction of the mist are set according to your preferences. The LED display shows all the relevant readings and the unit has a built in Humidistat which displays the percentage of humidity in the room. When you set the humidity level, the device will adjust the mist and keep the humidity at the level you have set.

There is also a sleep mode function which allows you to set the humidifier to stop at any given time.  When the set time is reached, the nightlight is turned off, and the humidifier reverts to the lowest mist output, this function is perfect if you want to keep comfortable all night.  The unit is also fitted with an automatic shut-off function, a very important feature which provides peace of mind if the tank runs dry.

Cool mist humidifiers produce high steam that is cool to the touch, making it safer if you have small children or pets. Another advantage is the use of negative ions in the filter which improves breathing by purifying the air. Great if you have a smoker in the house!

The water tank holds more than 4 liters of water, which will give you 15 hours of uninterrupted use, taking you right through the night. The tank which has to be removed from the bottom tray needs to be filled upside down. Moving this can result in water being left in the tray which could cause spills, or if left standing could go moldy. A little annoying, yes, but once you know this happens, be prepared to wipe this up with a towel.  There are two handles on top and at the bottom of the tank which makes it easy to move and refill. The tank needs to be cleaned once every couple of weeks to prevent the buildup of bacteria. This can be done with a solution of water and vinegar. When not in use it is recommended that the whole unit is washed and air dried before storage.

It is always best to use distilled water for this type of humidifier. As with all Ultrasonic Air Humidifiers, the buildup of calcium from hard, untreated water could produce a very fine white dust which is dispersed with the mist. In time, this will be visible on your furniture. This unit cannot be used as an aromatherapy diffuser, it is not recommended that you add any oils or medication into the tank of this humidifier.

The filter is permanent and will only need replacing if it is faulty or broken. Cleaning the filter or any part of this humidifier is straightforward and easy. You can refer to The Owner’s Manual which has very clear and concise instructions

If you are in the market for a very versatile, multifunctional humidifier, the TaoTronics Cool Mist Humidifier is an excellent choice.

6. Remedies Cool Mist Ultrasonic

Remedies Cool Mist UltrasonicOne of the most lightweight and compact tears shaped humidifiers, the Remedies Cool Mist Humidifier is small enough to be placed on your bedside table. Available in two colors, black and white this Ultrasonic Humidifier is reasonable priced and adequate if you need to humidify a small to medium sized room. This small humidifier is practically inaudible and emits a nice cool mist. It can be used as a diffuser as well, essential oils can be placed in the crescent shaped tray provided, and the unit comes with 5 extra replacement diffuser sponges and two diffuser trays, one at the bottom in the back, and another removable tray which can be placed on the top.  Enjoy the aromatherapy function with your favorite essential oils while humidifying the area.

The unit comes with a high-quality stone filter which helps to purify the water before it develops into a mist. The vapor flow can be adjusted by the knob control which is simple to use. There is a LED light power indicator, and the unit comes with 7 color changes, namely red, orange, blue, indigo, violet, orange, and green. You have the option of choosing one color or rotating all the colors. For people who like to have a night light, this is perfect, changing the ambiance of the room according to your mood, can be fun.

If there is a problem with the humidifier, you will be notified by the red LED light indicator. The owner’s manual comes with a troubleshooting section which will guide you through the steps needed to rectify the problem.

The reservoir capacity is 2.8 liters, and the unit can run from 10 – 14 hours continuously. The unit is fitted with an automatic shut-off function which comes into effect when the water is low. An important function for peace of mind, if you want to leave the humidifier running all night. As with all ultrasonic humidifiers, it is always best to use distilled water in the tank to avoid the formation of calcium which is prevalent in untreated water. This can produce fine white dust that will eventually settle on your furniture.

Keeping this humidifier clean can be a bit of a challenge. When you remove the water tank, some water remains on the stand at the bottom. If this is not cleaned each time the tank is filled, mold can develop, and this will eventually cause harmful bacteria. Allowing the unit to run dry before refilling can reduce leakage onto the bottom tray. It might also be a good idea not move the tank and rather refill with a jug of water. There are 3 rubber at the bottom of this humidifier, make sure that these are pushed in all the way so that the unit stands level. It is important that the humidifier is straight otherwise you will have water leakage.

After every 40 hours of use, it is advisable to take apart all the removable parts of the humidifier and clean with a solution of bleach, vinegar, and water. Follow this with a good rinse and then towel dry. Humidifiers can become a health hazard unless frequently cleaned, with time slime will build up in hard to reach places unless regularly cleaned. If you are storing the humidifier for an extended period of time, take it apart and clean thoroughly. Make sure that the tank is empty and allow to air dry. Always store in dry conditions.

If you are looking for a compact, aesthetically pleasant humidifier/diffuser for your room, this is a very reasonably price choice.

Pros

Compact and lightweight
Very quiet
High-quality stone filter
Adjustable mist control
7 color night light
Aromatherapy diffuser
Automatic shutoff function
Reasonably priced

Cons

Water tank opening too small
Water tank leaks onto bottom unit
Challenge to keep clean

7. AIRCARE EP9 800 – Best Whole House Humidifier

AIRCARE EP9 800This highly recommended evaporative humidifier looks like the pedestal, which resembles a piece of furniture looks good aesthetically and fits in with the most wooden home decor. Designed to humidify a whole house of up to 2,500sq feet this unit comes with a Digital Humidistat which automatically maintains the desired humidity level with digital accuracy.

Even though it is rather large, this unit is not heavy, and it’s easy to assemble. The only moving part is the fan. Once connected it makes a difference to the humidity in the house immediately. There is a link on YouTube from Essick which explains how to unpack, assemble and operate. Instructions are also in the user manual which comes with this appliance.  Decide which is the best place to place the unit, it should be centrally situated to give the maximum effect for the whole house. Never put the appliance on a carpet or under a window because this can cause condensation.

The large water tank can hold over 13 liters of water and is enough to keep the humidifier working for up to 60 hours on a low setting. Water is added to the tank through a small door located in the middle of the unit. Unfortunately, there is no way to see the level of the water from the outside, so be careful not to overfill and cause a spillage. There are markings for the maximum level on the inside of the tank which you can only see if you use a flashlight. The unit comes with caster wheels which are a great plus. If you have a level area and you can roll the unit to the water outlet you are using, it will eliminate carrying jugs of water to the unit. The only problem with the wheels is that you would have to roll the unit back slowly and steadily so that the full tank does not spill over while moving it.

Tap water contains minerals that can promote bacterial growth inside your humidifier. You should either use distilled water or a bacteriostatic treatment every time you refill the tank. The Essick Air 1970 Humidifier Bacteriostatic Treatment is recommended. You will need about 1 tablespoon per refill to keep the mold and mildew under control. It is recommended that the humidifier is cleaned at least once every couple of weeks to maintain optimum conditions in your home.  Cleaning instructions are clearly explained in the user manual.

The replaceable wick removes impurities from the water. This is said to prevent bacteria, mold, and fungus. If you are using the bacteriostatic treatment as directed, the wick will last for over 2 months without needing to be replaced. If you decide not to use this treatment, it is recommended that you clean the wick and turn it inside out with every water change. The Aircare humidifier has a built-in indicator which will flash when the wick needs to be replaced. The BestAir CB43 Essick 1043 replacement wick filter, which is recommended, is of a very high quality and they are fairly inexpensive. A small price to pay for keeping your home mold and fungus free.

There is an automatic shut-off function which comes into effect when the desired humidity level is reached, or when the unit is low on water and needs to be refilled. It also has a ‘dry out’ mode which keeps the fan running for 20 minutes after the tank is empty to prolong the life of the filter (wick). The fan speed can be controlled and comes with 10 settings. Settings 1 & 2 are quiet, but as you go higher, so the noise increases, so basically it is up to the individual to set the fan at speed suitable for their circumstances. Having said that most people find the first two settings adequate to keep the humidity level desired.

The Aircare EP9 800 humidifier uses evaporative technology with a wick filter. This type of technology is usually energy efficient and can run on less electricity than other types of humidifiers. Humidity levels need to be at least 40% to be effective. Keeping the house at this level constantly can prevent sickness from the airborne disease like the cold and flu virus. This level of humidity is also beneficial for people who suffer from bronchial and asthmatic illnesses and to prevent dry eyes and skin. In very dry climates the humidity can protect furniture and plants.

The digital readout on this humidifier shows the humidity level, and the fan speed, customizing these settings to produce the right humidity for your home is pretty simple.

A remote control is available and can be ordered if required. Used in combination with the humidifier, you can easily monitor your temperature and humidity levels and control your humidifier remotely. Turn the humidifier on/off, adjust the fan speed, or change your desired humidity level with just the push of a button.

This is a very efficient and humidifier for the whole house and comes highly recommended.

Pros

Artistically crafted
Simple set up
Nine variable speeds
Big water tank
Up to 60 hours use
Filter change indicator
Low water indicator
Has wheels

Cons

Many trips to fill up
Remote control not supplied
Needs constant treatment
Wick replacement

8. Crane Drop Ultrasonic Cool Mist – Best Humidifier for Baby

Crane Drop Ultrasonic Cool MistStylish and compact, The Crane Drop Ultrasonic Cool Mist Humidifier is light and portable. It is tear shaped and is available in some colors that will fit in with any décor. Suitable for small rooms of up to 250sq meters, this unit has antimicrobial material in the base which substantially reduces mold and bacteria build up. This energy saving humidifier uses less power than a light bulb.  Its ultrasonic technology produces a cool mist which makes it safer for small children and pets. The moisture added to the dry air provides relief from nasal congestion, colds, and the flu, and also prevents dry and itchy skin conditions. It comes with a night light positioned in the base that illuminates the room with a very soft light.

The Crane Humidifier can run up to 24 hours on the medium setting with the 9-liter water capacity it offers. A 360-degree nozzle which only moves up or down is fitted to allow you to direct the mist in the direction most convenient for your circumstances. Unfortunately, the mist can only be directed up, not to the side, and it should not really be described as 360 degrees! The unit is fitted with the all-important automatic shut off feature that switches the humidifier off when the water runs low. This ensures safety, if you use the humidifier through the night.

The humidifier should be placed on an elevated surface, not on a carpet or sensitive wood. The spout which releases the mist is rather small, and this could result in a bit of dampness around the humidifier.

It is simple to use, but care must be taken when filling and cleaning the tank. To fill the tank remove from the unit and unscrew the tank cap. Fill with water, replace the cap, making sure the cap seal is in place. Most breakdowns occur when water gets into the motor, be careful when filling and don’t tilt the base in case of water accidently gets into the motor. The handle at the top of the tank makes it easy to flip over for replacing on the base, but it is not very strong, and it is advisable to lift the full tank with both hands to avoid breakage.

It is recommended that the water tank is emptied and thoroughly rinsed out daily. It is always best to use distilled water, which is inexpensive, for this type of humidifier. As with all Ultrasonic Air Humidifiers, the buildup of calcium from hard, untreated water will deposit mold in the water tank, and it could produce a very fine white dust which is dispersed with the mist. In time, this will be visible on your furniture.

The tank needs to be cleaned weekly to prevent the buildup of bacteria. This can be done with a solution of water and vinegar. Let it sit for 30 minutes and then rinse and dry thoroughly, when not in use it is recommended that the whole unit is disinfected with vinegar and chlorine and air dried before storage.

This unit cannot be used as an aromatherapy diffuser, it is not recommended that you add any oils or medication into the tank of this humidifier.

If you are looking for a small, inexpensive humidifier that looks great and is almost silent, this is the humidifier for you.

The Auto Swing feature, which swings the unit from left to right at a 45-degree angle is an added bonus as this allows the mist to be distributed for a wider range of humidification. This makes the unit suitable for larger rooms. Be aware that the electrical cord is attached to the movable part of this unit and moves when the unit swings. Make sure that the cord is clear so that there are no mishaps. The appliance has an auto shut feature which automatically switches off the unit when the water tank is empty. This is an important feature as it prevents breakage and overheating.

At the back of the unit, you will find a diffuser tray with a reusable pad for essential oils. This unit works well for Aromatherapy. DO NOT add the essential oils or any medication directly into the water tank, as this can cause damage to the machine.

It is advisable not to put the unit on the carpet or on any delicate furniture as things nearby can get damp. The water tank comes with a convenient handle, and it is easy to pull out of the machine and carry when full. Be aware that some water might be left on the base of the unit when you remove the tank. Wipe this area and keep it dry to avoid the buildup of mold. The instruction manual which is supplied with the machine is not easy to understand and written in poor English. If you need help, there is a video on YouTube that is easy to follow.

This is not a stand-alone humidifier. It should never be placed on the floor, especially if you have a carpet. Instructions strictly state that for optimum performance, the unit must be placed at least 2 feet of the ground on a table or nightstand, to avoid moisture wetting the floor. This gives the mist the opportunity to evaporate before settling on the floor.

The capacity of the water tank is over 12 liters, and the humidifier will work continuously for up to 24 hours, before needing a refill.

To keep the Boneco Air-O-Swiss Ultrasonic Humidifier working in peek condition, there are essential water maintenance products that must be used. A Demineralization Cartridge to prevent lime scale and mineral residue, and the Hydro Cell which provides an advanced water maintenance system. The Cartridge should last up to 3 months before it needs to be changed. Refill Granules are available for the cartridges, which is cheaper that replacing the whole cartridge. Depending on the quality of the water, the Hydro Cell also need to be replaced every couple of months. Air-O-Swiss supplies all the maintenance products and also manufactures a cleaner/descale powder for cleaning this unit.

The unit has a built-in timer that goes off every couple of weeks to remind you to clean and descale the unit. The water tank should be emptied out completely and rinsed before every refill and descaled and washed every 2 weeks. You can use a descaler or vinegar, which ever works best for you. You can use tap water for this humidifier because the water will bypass the system in place and purify the water. Care must be taken when refilling the unit as you have to turn it upside down and refill from the bottom. This is connected to the filter which has to be removed and replaced with every refill. Obviously, water will leak out, so it is best to do this over the sink. There is no distinct fill line on the water tank so be careful not to overfill.

Although this humidifier is high maintenance and has extra running expenses, the truth of the matter is, that if you take the purity of the air that you and your family breathe in seriously, the Boneco Air-O-Swiss Ultrasonic Humidifier has covered all the bases. Keeping the demineralization cartridge and Hydro Cell up to date and the humidifier properly descaled, will ensure that there is no buildup of any residue and will prolong the life of the unit.

It is strongly advised not to put any aromatherapy oils or any medication in this humidifier. This could ruin the machine, in which case you would not be covered by any warranty.

On the more expensive side, the Boneco Air-O-Swiss Ultrasonic Humidifier delivers what it promises. If you are looking for a humidifier with cool and warm mist, that has all the extras, then this is the best humidifier for you and your family.

Humidifiers: Why use them?

Humidifiers can provide your family with comfort and relief from allergies, colds, sinus and respiratory ailments by keeping the air moist and restoring the humidity in your home to healthy levels. In very dry and cold climates, the moist air dispersed by humidifiers, provide relief from dry and cracked skin and also help to control static electricity and dust in your home.

It is recommended that humidity levels in winter should be maintained between 40 to 50 % for maximum benefit. The best way to do this is with a humidifier.

There are basically 3 types of humidifiers, Ultrasonic, Evaporative or Steam Based. Humidifiers add moisture to your room using either warm or cool mist technologies. Most humidifiers work with cool mist, but there are a few option if the warm mist is what you prefer. Although both accomplish the same thing, getting moisture into the air, the warm mist can be more soothing for congestion and sinuses.  A true warm mist humidifier can also make the air feel warmer and keep more heat in the room.

There are some disadvantages with warm mist humidifiers. They are more prone to getting clogged up and dirty unless you take special care to clean regularly and use distilled or softened water. They also use more electricity as there is an element which boils the water and they are not recommended if you have small children or pets as they could cause accidental burns.

On the other hand, cool mist humidifiers work best in areas with hard water and are very economical to run, this off course depending on the size of humidifier you choose.

Careful consideration must be given as to which humidifier will fit best with your family’s lifestyle and needs. With so many options available today, it’s a difficult choice, and deciding factors are the features of the humidifier, the initial cost and how easy they are to maintain.

What type of humidifier to buy?

1. Ultrasonic Warm/Cool Mist

Currently, the Ultrasonic humidifiers, are the most popular on the market. They use a metal diaphragm which vibrates with high-frequency sound waves to break down the moisture particles in the water and disperse a very fine mist.  The main potential problem with ultrasonic humidifiers is that it produces white dust which can be dispersed into the air, however with new advanced technology, that some of the more expensive humidifiers have, this problem has been solved.

That is why it’s best to choose an ultrasonic humidifier that uses a demineralization cartridge to remove impurities from the water. This will prevent calcium buildup from untreated water and eliminate the need to use distilled water. A mineral filter eliminates bacteria before they are dispersed into the air and is by far the healthier option to choose. Ultrasonic humidifiers are very energy efficient and reasonably priced.

Most Ultrasonic Humidifiers produce only cool mist. One exception is the BONECO Air-O-Swiss Warm or Cool Mist Ultrasonic Humidifier which offers a choice of warm or cool mist.

Advantages of Ultrasonic Cool Mist Humidifiers

The cool mist output makes them safer for small children and pets
They are lightweight and practically silent
The humidity can be raised to over 50%
Cool mist soothes dry, itchy and cracked skin
Reduces static electricity in the air
Multifunctional
Simple to operate and maintain
Most models come with an automatic shut-off valve
Cartridges and filters are available to prevent mineral residue and mold formation
Automatic settings for humidity and mist control
Humidistat to measure moisture in the air

2. Evaporative Mist Humidifiers

Evaporative humidifiers are an excellent choice for people with the respiratory problem, the elderly and for the baby’s nursery. They are less expensive to run because there is no heating element. With an evaporative type of humidifier, humidity is produced by a fan that draws air from the atmosphere and then blows it through a wet, replaceable filter wick. The wick removes impurities from the water and is said to kill up to 99% of bacteria, mold, fungus and viruses. The units that come with a UV light are the best as they kill bacteria in the water before they come in contact with the wick. Evaporative humidifiers are self-regulating and usually raise the humidity in the room quickly and efficiently. They are not as quiet as the ultrasonic humidifiers, especially on the higher settings.

The changing of the wick filter is high maintenance, and it can be expensive, but you have to take into consideration that the filter works with a self-regulating Evaporative System which adjusts the amount of moisture in the air and they work together to remove impurities and provide clean and healthy moisture. This makes the cost and effort worth it.

Advantages of Evaporative Cool Mist Humidifiers

Affordable
Suitable for larger rooms
Easy to operate and maintain
Healthy clean air
Safe for children and pets
Wick filters remove impurities
No white dust
No excess moisture

3. Steam Vaporizer Warm Mist Humidifiers

Humidifiers that produce only warm mist are also called vaporizers. They are usually small and compact and suitable for smaller rooms. The Steam Warm Mist humidifiers have a heating element that boils the water before dispersing steam into the air, thus destroying bacteria, germs, and microbes in the water tank. This allows the use of tap water to be used instead of distilled or purified water which is recommended for most humidifiers. They don’t require ongoing expenses like filters or cartridges, and they are quieter than most humidifiers. Many of these models have a medicine cup which allows the addition of vapor style medicine, like Vicks, to be added. Great for the relief of the common cold and bronchial problems. They are more expensive to run because they need more electricity to heat the water. Although the water is free from bacteria, warm water which is allowed to stand will cause mold in the machine or heating plate. It is recommended that you clean and soak all movable parts of these humidifiers with white vinegar, water and bleach to keep them mold free. The absence of an internal fan in steam humidifiers makes them practically silent.

Warm mist humidifiers are not recommended if you have small children as they could cause burns if accidentally knocked over. Warm mist humidifiers are not recommended for people who have asthma.

Advantages of Steam Warm Mist Humidifiers

Small and compact
Cheapest option
Vapor medication can be added
Completely silent
Boiled water kills germs

What size humidifier do you need?

When it comes to deciding what size humidifier you want to purchase, you must take into account the recommended square footage each one covers to ensure that it is adequate for your space. The other consideration is the dispersion rating, which means the capacity of water the humidifier can hold and the amount of time the unit will work before requiring a refill.

Humidifiers come in three size descriptions as follows:

1. Portable/Tabletop Humidifiers

The smallest in size, these humidifiers are available in ultrasonic, cool and warm mist humidifiers. They are suitable for smaller rooms and come with a variety of extra functions, like the night light and automatic settings. With these humidifiers, it is advisable to put them on a small table or bed stand as the moisture released could damage carpets and sensitive furniture. If you choose a humidifier of this size, make sure the appliance is light and easy to carry as the water tank needs to be refilled regularly.

2. Room Humidifiers

There are a lot of options to choose from in this category. This would include ultrasonic and evaporative warm & cool humidifiers. Room humidifiers are larger and can be used for bigger areas and multiple rooms. Humidifiers of this size come with a lot of extra features, and they are versatile and multifunctional.

3.Whole House Humidifiers

If what you are looking for is a humidifier large enough to humidify the whole house, there are console models that are free standing that will humidify an area of up to 2700sq feet. This off course will depend if there open doorways or the area is open plan. This type of humidifier looks like a piece of furniture and has a large water tank which can keep the house humidified for up to 36 hours on a low setting. There are also models that can be fitted permanently in your home, this would involve connecting the humidifiers with a constant supply of water and electricity and is usually fitted into a house when it is constructed.
