Best Canister Vacuums

A canister vacuum is like a little tank attached to a long hose. They hose can be attached to different heads depending on your cleaning needs. The canister portion is usually on wheels, so you can glide it around while you clean, but this can sometimes be limiting.

The long hose and different attachments allow you to clean a multitude of areas including bare floors, curtains, ceiling, furniture, and stairs to name a few.

1. Dyson Cinetic Animal – Best Vacuum for Pet Hair

Dyson Cinetic Animal Canister VacuumWhile Dyson may be pricy for some shoppers, there is no doubt that this vacuum is a quality investment.

Targeted at pet owners, this machine constantly maintains its suction while the canister fills, making it perfect to pick up pet dander. With 54 Dyson Cinectic tips oscillating up to 5,000 times per second, the vacuum can pick up ultra fine particles.

It will never lose its suction due to a clogged filter because it doesn’t have a filter. Meaning no filter to clean or replace and a lower lifetime maintenance cost.

The Dyson Cintetic science picks up microscopic fine dust and dirt particles from carpets and upholstery. Unique ball technology allows a full range of motion so that you can move effortlessly around the house without getting stuck. You can reach under furniture and hard to reach places. Without a headlight on the vacuum, it can be difficult to see when cleaning darker areas.

The soft carbon fiber filaments gently clean hard wood floors, while the stiff nylon bristles pick up dirt from carpet. However, this vacuum will have a hard time cleaning plush or berber carpets.

With an easy to clean hygienic bin, all you do is press a button to release the debris. The canister itself has a fill mark that tells you when it’s time to empty. Unfortunately, the canister is quite small and needs to be emptied frequently, which could slow cleaning down.

The vacuum itself has built-in storage units to hold various accessories. These accessories can be clicked in and out of place and used with both the hose and handle.

A retractable 21-foot power cord runs the vacuum, allowing you move freely and quietly while the cord retracts.

Pros

No filter = low lifetime maintenance cost.
Low-profile head to reach difficult spaces.
Doesn’t lose its powerful suction over time.

Cons

There is no headlight to see dark places.
Small canister that needs to be emptied frequently.
The vacuum is about 24 pounds, making it difficult to carry.

2. BISSELL Zing Bagless

BISSELL Zing Bagless Canister VacuumThe next up is another powerful suction wonder with no bags needed in its lifetime. This vacuum gives you the bang for your buck with an inexpensive price, but strong cleaning capabilities.

The Zing has multi-surface cleaning ability from hardwood floors to carpets without losing its potent cyclonic suction! The only downside is, the powerful motor makes the vacuum noisy and not ideal for use when perhaps a baby is sleeping or someone is on the phone.

The variable suction control allows you to move from floors to curtains, upholstery, and even difficult crevices in your car’s interior. The lift-off makes the vacuum versatile in that it can clean larger areas as well as stairs and hard to reach places.

In addition to being bagless, the dustbin is easy to clean as well.

There is a three-stage filtration system with dirt cup and post-motor filters to collect finer dust and debris. The filters are washable and re-usable, so you don’t have to worry about replacing them either!

Unlike most canister vacuums, the Zing is extremely lightweight—only weighing 10 pounds! Its weight makes it easy to use for everyone and in more difficult areas like stairs—unlike bulkier vacuum models. There is a 14-foot retractable power cord, giving a decent reach around the house while cleaning. With two small wheels and a pivoting wheel, your unit will roll along the floor with ease.

As far as accessories go, this vacuum does not pack a lot of extras. It comes with a dusting brush and crevice tool, which allows you to clean most areas in a household. Inexpensive accessory packs can be purchased as well that are compatible with the Zing.

Pros

The powerful suction makes cleaning easier the first time.
Lightweight body allows for free movement around the house without the fuss.
There is a three-stage filtration collects the finer dust particles and dander.

Cons

There are lots of plastic parts that can break easily or might seem flimsy.
The powerful motor creates a noisy unit—not recommended for use while someone is sleeping or on the phone.

3. Miele Complete C2 Limited Edition

Shark Cordless Pet Perfect II Hand Vac SV780Coming from a high-end brand of highly effective vacuums, the Limited Edition Miele C2 is no different. This quality mid-size vacuum can last 20 years while working like it did on day one.

The lightweight body is easy to move around at even the slightest prod. With three bottom wheels, the vacuum can smoothly swivel with little effort to maneuver.
From the floor to the ceiling, the Miele C2 does it all. It can go from hardwood to carpet using its six speeds settings. Two main heads are included—the Turbo Comfort Brush to release embedded dirt and pick up animal hair, and the AllTeQ Combination floor tool for low carpets and smooth floors. Despite the vacuum’s power, a 1200-watt Vortex motor keeps the machine quiet.

Miele is consistently built from high quality materials such as the stainless steel telescopic wand with a 21-foot radius. Three additional accessories are attached to the vacuum, including a crevice nozzle, dusting brush, and upholstery tool to meet all your cleaning needs.

An AirClean filtration system seals in 99.9% of dust to protect the air quality of your home while cleaning. The vacuum does use both a self-sealing bag and a filter, and while it comes with both upon initial purchase, the filter is not HEPA approved. Both expenses can add up over time, increasing the cost to maintain.

Pros

Extremely lightweight and easy to maneuver from the bottom to the top of your house.
Six different suction levels work effectively on any surface.
AirClean system and Self-sealing bags keep your environment clean and free from allergen causing dust particles.
1200-watt Vortex motor for a quiet clean.

Cons

Requires dust bags and air filters, which leads to added costs over a lifetime.
Doesn’t work very well on high-piele carpet.
Doesn’t come with a HEPA filter.

4) Dirt Devil Featherlite Cyclonic

Dirt Devil Featherlite Cyclonic Bagless Canister VacuumA canister vacuum isn’t normally synonymous with lightweight, but this unit is true to its Featherlite name.

The vacuum itself weighs less than 10 pounds to make up for the short 16-foot retractable power cord. It is compactable with a handle, making it easy to carry around the house and store in small spaces.

The Dirt Devil is also bagless, which will save you a lifetime of expenses of replacement bags for the machine.

Instead, there is a bottom empty dirt cup, which can easily be released by hitting the switch. The bottom is clear, allowing you to see when your unit is filling up. Even when the dirt canister is getting full, the cyclonic technology keeps a consistent clean.

Cleaning performance is strong on flatter rugs, hardwood surfaces, and tile, but will struggle on carpet due to the lack of motorized brush. While it can still be used on carpet to clean the surface, it won’t pick up any fixed dirt in medium to deep carpets. The absent motorized brush also can make it difficult to push along thicker surfaces.

A cyclonic filtration system further separates the collected dirt and dust, while the HEPA Media filtration defends against up to 99% of allergens. The HEPA filter is washable but needs to be replaced around every six months.

With a flexible telescopic extension wand and hose cleaning stairs and awkward areas is a breeze. The 7.5’ length is perfect to prevent stress on your body while cleaning and can be used for pet hair removal or upholstery cleaning.

Easy to use foot pedals are included to power your vacuum on and off or use the cord rewind.

Pros

Good for hard surface floors such as wood or tile.
7.5-foot telescopic wand can reach difficult places such as the ceiling.

Cons

The lack of a motorized brush makes it difficult to push along carpet or get dirt embedded into deeper layers.
While the bag doesn’t need to be replaced, the filter does roughly around every 6 months, which is an added cost.
At 16-feet, the retractable cord is relatively short, which means you’ll have to keep switching outlets while cleaning.

5. Eureka Mighty Mite – Best Vacuum under $100

Eureka Mighty Mite Canister Vacuum 3670GIf you are looking for a lightweight vacuum that works great on hardwood, bare floor, linoleum, and tiled surface then the Eureka 3670G might be in the running for you.

Weighing in at just 8.2 pounds, the Eureka 3670G features two long and removable extension wands to reach around the house and ceilings.

A 20-foot retractable provides enough length to stay plugged in during a cleaning session.

There is no motorized brush, so the company recommends this vacuum for homes with largely bare floor surfaces, as it is not effective on rugs or carpets.

A 12-amp motor does provide enough strength to suck up pet hair, dust, and mites on hard surfaces. In addition to floors, it will also clean upholstery, curtains, and vents that most upright vacuums would struggle with.

Comes with a unique blower function that can be used for getting rid of leaves on your front step. Also includes a floor tool with a 10-inch cleaning radius.

The Eureka 3670G uses bags to dispose of waste, which are easy to clean and remove, but can lead to an added cost over its lifetime.

This bagged vacuum is a plus for those who suffer from respiratory issues, as it doesn’t allow the dust and debris to blow around in the air. Though it lacks a HEPA rated filter, one can be purchased separately and used.

Pros

Lightweight and easy to carry around the house.
Good for hard surface floors such as wood, tile, and linoleum.
Powerful suction with adjustable ring to pick up dust and mites.

Cons

The absence of a motorized brush makes this vacuum more suitable for hardwood floors and surfaces, not carpet.
Uses bags, which can add up over a lifetime.
Doesn’t come with a HEPA filter.

6. Bissell 1161 Hard Floor Expert Deluxe – Best Vacuum for Hardwood Floors

Bissell 1161 Hard Floor Expert Deluxe Canister VacuumThis is the second BISSELL to grace our canister category and with good reason. It’s powerful enough to combat harsh dirt, but gentle enough on your floors to keep them intact while cleaning. The non-marking rubber wheels will allow you to tread on hardwood floor and tiles without leaving scuffmarks behind.

Digital fingertip switches control the suction power, so you can move between different surfaces with ease. Speaking of ease, this vacuum is also lightweight and easy to maneuver, making cleaning a quick task. You never have to feel like you are dragging the unit around the house. Despite being a canister vacuum, it is also easy to store away

The dirt tank is easy to empty from the bottom, so you can get rid of the dirt without the mess. The dirt tank is on the small side, which means that you might find yourself stopping to clean the canister more often.

A hardwood cleaning head is included providing great suction for dusting your floors. An adjustable telescopic wand allows you to reach difficult and high up places such as ceiling or shelves. Like most units, it also comes with a crevice and dusting tool to get in between furniture, on upholstery, or the inside of your car.

Pros

Lightweight and easy to move around the house without hassle.
Powerful suction to dust hardwood floors and tile.
Adjustable suction can be controlled using the handle.

Cons

Small dirt canister needs to be cleaned frequently.

Best Stick Vacuums & Electric Brooms

These lightweight vacuums tend to be easy to move around the house. While they don’t reach the same level of deep cleaning as a traditional upright vacuum, they are great for light cleaning and touch ups.

Some stick vacuums even serve as 2-in-1, so you have both a small full vacuum and a handheld as well.

1. Dirt Devil Vacuum Cleaner Accucharge

Dirt Devil Vacuum Cleaner Accucharge Cordless 15.6 Volt Bagless Stick VacuumThe first stick vacuum to grace our list is a cordless Dirt Devil Accucharge. With a 15.6 Volt battery, this unit uses 70% less energy than its competitors while charging in just a short six hours.

The AccuCharge system’s main feature is that it detects when the battery is sufficiently charged and reduces the current to increase its overall lifetime. Put simply, you can’t overcharge or overheat the battery.

Despite this element, the battery isn’t a lithium ion, so there is no definite lifetime from the manufacturer. Based on a majority of user reviews, the lifetime is between 10 to 20 minutes. It is also noisy, which can be limiting.

The brush roll can easily be switched on or off to move from carpet to hardwood floors. A motorized brush picks up pet or human hair on both types of floors, but frequently jams the beater bar and needs to be cleaned. While this Dirt Devil can clean a flat carpet, it works best when used on hardwood or tile.

No other accessories come with this vacuum.

It’s lightweight and easy to move around the house, making cleaning less strenuous. The handle also folds away so you can store it conveniently.

A dirt cup stores debris and can be dumped by pressing a button. There is a main allergen filter to catch fine debris, but it can’t be washed, so you have to manually dislodge yourself.

Pros

Short 6-hour charge time with Accucharge system to increase battery service time.
Lightweight and easy to maneuver.

Cons

Short run time of 10 to 20 minutes.
Filter isn’t washable and has to be replaced roughly every 3 months—adding to the overall operating cost.
Motorized brush is difficult to clean and can get clogged easily.
Noisy.

2. BISSELL BOLT XRT PET 2-in-1

BISSELL BOLT XRT PET 2-in-1 Lightweight Cordless Vacuum 14.4v 1315This 2-in-1 BOLT vacuum by BISSELL is both lightweight and dynamic. At just 5.5 pounds, this unit can be used both as a standup or handheld cleaner.

It essentially functions as a handheld vacuum, but with a longer handle for an easier and less awkward cleaning experience. The 180-degree swivel steering allows you to move freely through your home. A two-way folding handle allows for flexibility when battling tough to reach spaces, while also making it easier to store away.

The 14.4 volt and nickel-metal hydride battery provides a run time of up to 20 minutes of cordless power but requires a lengthy eight hours of charging before use.

Multiple accessories are included to fit your different cleaning needs. A crevice tool with dusting brush and a pet hair nozzle teach both specifically for the hand vac, pick up difficult dust and fur left behind by critters. A pet hairbrush roll is included in the stand up portion of the unit to also suck up any remaining debris.

Unfortunately, the dirt reservoir is small and can get clogged easily. When it is full, the container can overflow, putting debris back into your home.

Pros

Dynamic and serves as both a standup and handheld unit.
Flexible to reach different areas of your home.
Lightweight.

Cons

Long 8 hour charge time for a short 20-minute run time
Small dirt reservoir that can get messy when full.

3. Electrolux Ergorapido Lithium Ion 2-1

Electrolux Ergorapido Lithium Ion 2-1 Stick and Handheld Vacuum EL2055BElectrolux provides our list with another 2-1 stick and handheld vacuum through the Egorapido. It uses a high performance 10.8-volt lithium ion battery and can run up to 21 minutes from a short four-hour charge.

For the size and duality of the unit, it has good suction and can maneuver around the house using its 180-degree steering without difficulty. It’s self-standing so that it won’t fall over like a traditional clunky vacuum.

The vacuum is also lightweight—just 5.5 pounds—, which is good for a 2-1, and the handheld portion is easy to detach with the push of a button.

LED lights are installed on the front of the unit, so you can see behind or under difficult places and making debris visible. While there is a light on the main vacuum, there isn’t one on the handheld.

The bagless cyclonic action system provides consistent sucking power for an impeccable clean.

A crevice tool and dusting brush are also included to clean every nook and cranny—or even flat surfaces. These tools make it easier to tackle stairs and other hard to reach places.

Pros

Short four-hour charge time to get a full battery.
Lightweight for all members of the family and easy to navigate around the house.
Serves as both an upright and handheld vacuum, making it multifunctional.
Bagless—so no need to replace.

Cons

Short 21-minute lifetime.
Paper filter needs to be changed regularly and are an added cost.
A small dustbin limits the amount of work you can perform in one go.

4. Dyson V6 Cord Free – Best Lightweight Vacuum

Dyson V6 Cord Free VacuumImpeccably engineered, the cordless Dyson V6 provides a stress-free clean to your home. Since it is cordless, you have unrestricted access to move about your house from top to bottom.

It’s lightweight so you can physically clean from the floor to the ceiling without adding any accessories. The vacuum also fit nearly on the mounted docking station, which can be screwed to the wall while also holding two additional accessories.

With up to 20 minutes of suction and only 3.5 hours of charging, the motorized cleaner head can tackle all floor types, including carpet with embedded dirt and hair or hardwood floors/tile with fine dander. The stiff nylon bristles and carbon fiber filaments are versatile for cleaning different debris.

A non-motorized head is also included as well as a bristled extension and handy crevice tool.

In handheld mode, the wand easily detaches to fit other tools for the job.

The dustbin capacity is just a small .4 L, so you will frequently have to empty the cleaner. Fortunately, it is bagless, which does reduce the cost.

Pros

Short recharge time—four hours with a mountable docking station.
Can change to a hand held vacuum
Low center of gravity, so you can move from floor to ceiling without an extra steps or tools.

Cons

Short 20-minute lifetime.
Small .4 L dust bin capacity

5. Shark Navigator Freestyle

Shark Navigator Freestyle Cordless Stick Vacuum SV1106Quality cordless stick vacuums tend to be pricy, but not the Shark Navigator Freestyle.

With a 14.4-volt nickel metal hydride battery, you can get about 12 minutes of run time on carpet, and 17 minutes on a hard surface. According to the manufacturer, it takes between 5.5 hours to full charge, and the batteries are replaceable if necessary.

Two settings—bare floor and carpet—can be easily accessed by stepping on a simple foot switch, which is already taking a load off your back. It is lightweight—just 7 pounds—and the twisting head lets the vacuum glide around your household.

The motorized brush does an amazing job picking up pet hair and can be cleaned simply by unscrewing the brush itself or cutting the hair out. It works well on carpet unless super thick, and the suction is divine on a hardwood floor for picking up small to large debris.

There are two filters—form and mesh—that can both be removed and effortlessly cleaned in the sink. The dust cup is extra large, so you don’t need to stop your cleaning and frequently empty it. You can unclip the bin and empty it over the garbage without ever touching the mess.

This is solely a floor vacuum cleaner as there are no additional accessories or tools. Additional cleaners may be needed for smaller or hard to reach areas.

Pros

Inexpensive, but effective.
Short charge time compared to competitors.
Lightweight and easy to move around.
Can clean dirt and large debris.
XL dust cup

Cons

Short 17-minute lifetime.
No accessories—solely for floor use.
Not great for deep cleaning or use on thicker carpets.

Best Upright Vacuums

Uprights are the traditional design you associate with vacuum cleaners. They are traditionally floor cleaners and move back and forth during cleaning.

Typically, they have powerful suction to clean both hard floors and carpets. They tend to be heavier and less versatile than other types of vacuums as they are mostly used for floors. Some will include accessories that will help for other types of cleaning.

Shark Navigator Lift-Away Professional with Dust-Away & 2 Microfiber PadsWith excellent suction, you will be able to clean the dirt that your old vacuum left behind. This 2-1 unit serves as both an upright vacuum and lifts away. The vacuum as a whole is a light 13.7 pounds and only 8 pounds in lift-away mode.

Lift-Away allows you to move the canister around and clean difficult places. The swivel heads move gracefully from your touch without having to exert too much energy. From hardwood floors to carpets, the vacuum works efficiently to suck up chunks of dirt and fine particles. You can also turn the beater bar on/off to protect your hardwood floors and carpet from burns and scratches.

Despite its power, the Shark Navigator stays relatively quiet while in use.

The whole system uses Anti-Allergen Complete Seal Technology + a Hepa filter. This technology prevents 99.9% of dust and fine particles from going into your house’s environment. Instead, it traps all allergens inside, which is great for those with allergies or respiratory issues.

It’s bagless, so you don’t have to worry about wasting time and money with replacements. The dust cup is large enough so you don’t have to worry about stopping during your chores. It empties easily, getting all of the dirt out without the need to physically pull anything out. All the filters are washable—no need to change—but maybe keep a spare.

Buyer’s Guide

Why Buy a Vacuum Cleaner?

Everyone needs a vacuum cleaner. Floors need to be cleaned! Using a broom just moves the dirt around, and cannot compete with the suction power of a vacuum. For people who suffer from respiratory illnesses and allergies, vacuum cleaners are essential and they can improve their quality of life.

What Type Of Vacuum Cleaner Do You Need?

Vacuum cleaners are not what they used to be, in today’s world with all the new technology available, you will have a hard time deciding on which one to buy. Consideration should be given to Type, Size, Bag or Filter, Accessories and Cost. For your specific needs, consider the following, size of home, carpets/tiles, children, pets and whether you want a multifunctional vacuum for in-depth cleaning around the whole house.

The type of vacuum you choose depends on your floors, where Uprights are considered better for carpets, the Canister vacuums are more suitable for flat floors. In most cases the vacuum can be adjusted with retractable brushes to do both, but if you don’t need both features, and you only have flat floors, get one that is specially designed for this function. A good vacuum cleaner should be light and easy to move around between furniture and have a long enough retractable power cord for you to reach all four corners of the room. Another alternative is the cordless vacuums which are very fashionable today. The only downfall is that the battery will only last for a few hours so you will have to keep on recharging if you want to use for an extended period of time.

Most modern vacuum cleaners have accessories for cleaning upholstery and curtains, and small attachments for those hard to reach corners. The accessories should be taken into consideration before you purchase a vacuum, after all you want to be able to get the most out of your new appliance. Another big consideration should be the technology and filtration systems, which can play a huge role in removing dust and keeping the air clean.

Generally, there are 4 types of vacuums, Canister, Upright, Stick and Hand Held Vacuums. All have their pros and cons, the best one for you is the one that suits your personal needs. How powerful, heavy or noisy they are will definitely play a role in your choice, so will the cost.

Canister Vacuums

This type of vacuum has the motor in a canister or cylinder with wheels that you pull around with an attached, flexible telescopic extendible hose with attachments that suction up the dirt. They are easier and lighter to use than upright vacuums, but maybe not the best choice for people with bad backs. If you have pets, this is the ideal choice because the vacuum maintains its suction and the extended hose makes it easier to reach under furniture and into small spaces.

Most Canisters have an indicator which lets you know when it is full and needs to be emptied, and a long retractable power cord which allows you to move with it for quite a distance. Accessories that come with this type of vacuum are usually stored inside the canister for easy access.
If you do not like having the hassle of changing bags, there are models that come with their own filtration system and filters, these will need to be kept clean.

Upright Vacuum Cleaners
