Conventionally, in a control device for a vehicle steering gear, a master cylinder is disposed on the steering wheel side and is connected to a power steering assist hydraulic circuit which is for assisting the driver to turn the steering wheel. A valve spool in the hydraulic circuit is controlled by a fluid pressure produced by the driver’s turning operation of the steering wheel to increase or decrease the flow rate of fluid, for example, operating oil, supplied to an auxiliary pump which provides the fluid pressure for operating the power steering assist hydraulic circuit.
In order to operate the power steering assist hydraulic circuit, the fluid pressure produced by the auxiliary pump is supplied to the valve spool via a relief valve, a shut-off valve, and a pilot valve. When the steering wheel is not turned by the driver, the pilot valve is open, so that the fluid pressure produced by the auxiliary pump can be directly supplied to the valve spool via the pilot valve. When the steering wheel is turned, the pressure in a reservoir tank increases, the pilot valve closes and the fluid pressure produced by the auxiliary pump is applied to the valve spool via the shut-off valve.
When the steering wheel is turned, in order to stabilize the behavior of the vehicle during cornering, it is preferable to apply the driving force to the wheels by the fluid pressure produced by the auxiliary pump with the steering wheel turned to a limited extent and to rapidly increase the driving force when the steering wheel is further turned. Accordingly, in order to accomplish this, there is provided a control device having a feedback circuit wherein the vehicle speed is detected, and the supplied fluid pressure to the valve spool is controlled to increase the pressure by a specified value when the vehicle speed becomes lower than a predetermined value.
