Who is Eligible for the Homedust.com Scholarship?

Applicants must be enrolled full-time at a US college or university for the 2018-2019 academic year. Students must be 18 years of age or older and legal US residents to be eligible for the Homedust.com Scholarship.

How to Apply for the Homedust.com Scholarship

Interested applicants should write an essay of 750 words or more answering the question: “HOW IS THE INTERNET CHANGING OUR BRAIN?” The essay must be written in English.

Applicants shall send their essays to scholarship@homedust.com between January 10, 2018 and December 5, 2018. Essays must be received by 11:59 pm Pacific Standard Time on December 5, 2018 to be considered. Each applicant may submit only one (1) essay. After the original essay has been received by Homedust, no changes will be allowed. This means that no substitutions, new drafts, or corrections will be accepted.

Essays that are written in a language other than English, are shorter than 750 words, or are not the applicant’s original work will be rejected. Essays that are, at Homedust’s sole discretion, considered obscene, pornographic, or libelous will be automatically disqualified.

All essays submitted will become the property of Homedust. Homedust accepts no responsibility for essays which are lost, unintelligible, or arrive after the deadline for any reason. If an essay is confirmed by Homedust to have been erroneously deleted, lost, or destroyed the applicant’s sole remedy shall be resubmission of that essay, if time permits.

By submitting an essay, each applicant is fully and unconditionally accepting, and agreeing to, these Official Rules. The applicant also agrees to abide by Homedust’s decisions, which are final and binding.


By submitting as essay to the Homedust.com Scholarship Program, the applicant acknowledges and agrees that Homedust will own the submitted essay, including all publishing rights. Therefore, every applicant irrevocably grants, transfers, sells, assigns and conveys to Homedust, its successors and assignees, all present and future rights, title, and interest of every kind and nature whatsoever to the submitted essay. This includes, with no limits, all copyrights as well as all rights incidental, subsidiary, ancillary or allied thereto (including all derivative rights, with no limitations) in and to submitted essay for exploitation throughout the universe. These rights are granted in perpetuity, by means of any and all media and devices whether now known or hereafter devised.

Homedust shall have the right, at Homedust’s sole discretion, to edit, composite, morph, duplicate, or alter the submitted essay for any purpose which Homedust deems necessary or desirable. Each applicant irrevocably waives any and all so-called “moral rights” he or she may have in the submitted essay. By submitting an essay to apply for the Homedust.com Scholarship, the applicant acknowledges that he or she does not reserve any rights in or to the submitted essay.

Selection of Potential Winner of the Homedust.com Scholarship

Homedust will choose one (1) potential winner from the eligible applicants who follow the directions given here. Once chosen, Homedust will contact the potential winner via email. The potential winner will then be required to provide and/or sign further documentation as explained below.

Homedust accepts no liability should the notification sent to any potential winner be lost, intercepted, or fail to be received by the intended recipient for any reason. In addition, Homedust reserves the right to choose not to reward a scholarship if, at Homedust’s sole discretion, there is an insufficient number of eligible applicants.

By applying, applicants agree that Homedust may publish portions of the prize-winning essay on the Homedust website or in other marketing materials without further compensation or notice to the author.


The winner of the Homedust.com Scholarship will receive $3,000 USD (three thousand US dollars). All scholarship money will be paid directly to the student. This money may be spent only on tuition and education-related expenses. Full-time enrollment will be verified after the winner is selected. Should the potential winner no longer meet the application requirements when the prize is awarded, Homedust may choose to withhold the award. Homedust may revoke the award for any scholar who does not maintain the eligibility requirements for the duration of the 2018-2019 academic year. The Homedust.com Scholarship award may not be reassigned, transferred, or changed, except at the sole discretion of Homedust.

Applicants understand that Homedust is not liable for injuries, losses or damages of any kind arising from participation in this Scholarship Program and acceptance, possession and use of scholarship prize. Homedust is not responsible for any typographical or other error in the printing of the offer, administration of the Scholarship Program or in the announcement of the scholarship prize.


Except where prohibited by law, when accepting the scholarship prize the recipient agrees that Homedust may use his or her name, voice, and/or likeness for the purpose of advertising and promoting Homedust worldwide. This includes the Homedust website and Scholarship Program as well as any other promotion, contest, or sweepstakes offered by Homedust. The recipient agrees to receive no additional compensation or notice for this usage.

Dispute Resolution

Unless prohibited by law, applying for the Homedust.com Scholarship indicates that the applicant agrees that all issues and questions concerning the construction, validity, interpretation, and enforceability of these Official Rules shall be governed by, and construed exclusively in accordance with, the laws of the state of California without giving effect to any principles of conflicts of law of any jurisdiction. This is also true of the rights and obligations of the applicants, Homedust and their agents. By submitting an essay, every applicant agrees that any action at law or in equity arising out of or relating to this Scholarship Program, or awarding of the prizes, shall be filed only in the state or federal courts located in the state of California. Submission of an essay for consideration indicates that the applicant consents and submits to the personal jurisdiction of such courts for the purposes of litigating any such action.

Except where prohibited by law, by participating in the Homedust.com Scholarship Program that applicant agrees that: (a) any and all disputes, claims, and causes of action arising out of, or connected to, the Homedust.com Scholarship Program, or the award of the Scholarship Prize, shall be resolved individually without resorting to any form of class action; (b) any and all claims, judgments, and awards shall be limited to actual out-of-pocket costs incurred, including costs associated with participating in this Scholarship Program but, in no event, attorney fees; and (c) under no circumstances will any participant be permitted to obtain awards for, and hereby waives all rights to, claiming punitive, incidental and consequential damages and any other damages (other than for actual out-of-pocket expenses), and any and all rights to have damages multiplied or otherwise increased. Some jurisdictions do not allow the limitations or exclusion of liability for incidental or consequential damages, so the above may not apply to all Homedust.com Scholarship applicants.

Representations, Warranties, and Indemnification

By submitting an essay to the Homedust.com Scholarship Program the applicant represents and warrants to Homedust as follows: (a) the submitted essay is the applicant’s own original, previously unpublished, and previously unproduced work; (b) the submitted essay is wholly original with applicant and, as of the date of submission, is not the subject of any actual or threatened litigation or claim; (c) the submitted essay neither infringes upon, nor violates, the intellectual property rights or other rights of any other person or entity; (d) the submitted essay does not, and will not, violate any applicable laws, and meets the Submission Requirements set forth above. The applicant hereby agrees to indemnify and hold Homedust harmless from and against any and all third-party claims, actions or proceedings of any kind and from any and all damages, liabilities, costs and expenses relating to or arising out of any breach or alleged breach of any of the warranties, representations, or agreements of the applicant hereunder.

No Obligation to Use

Homedust shall have no obligation (express or implied) to use any winning essay, or to otherwise exploit a winning essay or continue the development, production, distribution or exploitation thereof. Homedust may, at any time, abandon the use of the winning essay for any reason, with or without legal justification or excuse. In such a case, the Scholarship Prize recipient shall not be entitled to any damages or other relief by reason thereof.

General Release and Limitations on Liability

By entering the Homedust.com Scholarship Program, each applicant acknowledges and agrees that Homedust and its related companies, affiliates, and each such company’s respective employees, officers, directors and agents are not responsible for any costs, injuries, losses, or damages of any kind arising from or in connection with: (a) incomplete, lost, late, misdirected, or illegible entries; (b) for failure to receive submitted essays due to any cause including, without limitation, human, transmission, or technical problems, failures, or malfunctions of any kind, whether originating with sender or elsewhere, that may limit an Applicant’s ability to participate in the Homedust.com Scholarship Program; (c) any injury or damage resulting, directly or indirectly, in whole or in part, from participation in the Homedust.com Scholarship Program and/or the use of any prize including, without limitation, claims, costs, injuries, losses and damages related to personal injuries, death, damage to, loss or destruction of property, or any claims, costs, injuries, losses, or damages related to or based on the Applicant’s rights of publicity or privacy, or the Applicant’s claim that he or she has somehow been defamed or portrayed in a false light. Homedust assumes no responsibility for any damage to an Applicant’s computer system which is occasioned by accessing the Homedust website or by participating in the Homedust.com Scholarship Program, or for any computer system, phone line, hardware, software or program malfunctions, or other errors, failures, delayed computer transmissions or network connections that are human or technical in nature, or for the incorrect or inaccurate capture of information, or the failure to capture any information.

The Homedust.com Scholarship Program is subject to all U.S. federal, state, and local laws and regulations. Void where prohibited.

Homedust’s Right to Modify, Suspend, Or Terminate the Homedust.com Scholarship Program

Homedust shall have the right, in its sole discretion, to modify, suspend, or terminate the Homedust.com Scholarship Program.

General Provisions

Homedust reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to disqualify any individual who is found to be tampering with the application process or the operation of the Scholarship Program or Website. Likewise, any applicant found to be acting in violation of these Official Rules, to be submitting responses dishonestly or inaccurately, or to be acting in an unsportsmanlike or disruptive manner will be disqualified. In the event of a dispute as to the identity of any entrant, the authorized account holder of the email address used to enter will be deemed to be the entrant. The “authorized account holder” is the natural person assigned an email address by an Internet access provider, online service provider, or other organization responsible for assigning email addresses for the domain associated with the submitted email address. Should Homedust fail to enforce any term of these Official Rules, this shall not constitute a waiver of that, or of any other, provision.

Scholarship Winner Announcement

The name of the Scholarship Prize recipient of this Scholarship Program will be posted at www.homedust.com/scholarship/ on or around December 15, 2018.
